What is Micro-needling?
Automated micro-needling with the Eclipse Micropen Elite (also referred to as collagen induction therapy) is a treatment that uses tiny needles to create micro-treatment zones in the skin. These small injuries stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to help resurface the skin.
What are the benefits of micro-needling?
- Improves fine lines and deeper wrinkles
- Reduces acne scars
- Softens stretch marks
- Evens skin tone
- Lightens hyperpigmentation and sun spots
- Reduces appearance of pores
- Firms and smooths skin texture
- Improves scars
Who should get micro-needling?
Micro-needling is safe for all skin types. The treatment is great both for those who are trying to stimulate and maintain their skin as well as those who are attempting to achieve correction of fine lines and wrinkles or acne scars. The treatment has a very low risk profile and works well for patients with darker skin who may not be a candidate for laser services.
How many treatments are recommended?
Although visible improvement is often achieved with one session, a series of 3-6 sessions spaced approximately 3-6 weeks apart is recommended for optimal results. The eclipse pen is not a laser, it works through a similar mechanism as fractional lasers that resurface a portion of the skin with each visit.
What does micro-needling feel like?
We use a topical numbing agent prior to treatment to make our patients comfortable during the procedure. The sensation is described as diversely as vibration or the feeling of a light scratching.
What should I expect after the treatment?
You can expect to experience some mild redness and swelling immediately following micro-needling. This can last 24-48 hours depending on how aggressively the procedure is performed. Most patients are able to go about their business the next day. Some will experience mild shedding 2-3 days later, similar to a light peel.
Who performs the treatment?
The treatment is performed by a Registered Nurse or Licensed Esthetician under the careful supervision of Dr. Byun. Micro-needling is available in both downtown Chicago and Northbrook offices.
Is there any way to improve the results of Micro-needling?
Micro-needling can be performed in conjunction with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to enhance the results. The plasma is derived from your own blood. While your skin is numbing in preparation of the micro-needling treatment, we draw a small amount of blood. We then centrifuge the blood to extract the PRP. Plasma contains a high concentration of platelets and growth factors that stimulate healing. The plasma can penetrate directly into the micro-channels created during your Micropen treatment. It is like a concentrated rejuvenating serum made from your own body and delivered to the deepest layers of your skin.
